Like any craft, writing takes practice to perfect. The fundamental qualities a writer must possess, therefore, are patience and discipline. Next comes ambition; the desire to reach the top of your game. And last, but by no means least, is a genuine love of the English language and all its many nuances.
Good writers are creative and intuitive; they feel language in much the same way as a composer feels music. They do not hide behind flowery language and unecessary adverbs, are skilful enough to appreciate when simplicity is required, and bold enough to know when flamboyance is in order. They are passionate about their craft, sometimes to the exclusion of all else.
A good writer has the confidence to impart their knowledge and ideas irrespective of how well they are received. They believe in themselves, and if you believe in yourself, the sky really is the limit.
